Burnt Out

Headache's
My hands ache
Every finger’s gone numb
If I can't lift the pen
then new poems won't come
For some reason
forced to watch my peers sprint by
because I can't out run
Mentally
and emotionally fatigued
Too many hurdles tripping
and pulling me down to bruised knees
I was once a great writer
now those who read no longer believe
that I can again ever be
Something's wrong he's lost his desire
Rumors and whisper of man ready to retire
because he has nothing left to acquire
His new work's unworthy
of the acclaim etched on the many plaques holding
his name rested below past titles awarded trophies
A great man broken
Who once stood as the favorite chosen
know you can't even get his composition to open
Competition lost in the commotion
but no one's around him
Friends telling others there’s a different sound in him
What happened I use to love this race
Run books and dominate every blank page
Now I can't even keep pace
or bend over to tie my mental shoe lace
Creatively and inspirationally out of shape
I don't know
The work's become too stressful
I saw myself slowing the second I crossed the finish line
receiving the praise of a man too successful
I enjoyed my run to the top
but once you're there the work after doesn't seem as special
On the sidelines checking my watch
wondering if it's possibly writers block
or is it just a man that can no longer beat the qualifying clock
