I have been humbled
by being a witness
to a husband
enduring the sickness,
decline and demise
of a his belov’ed wife
who had been his crutch
more of his life
than he ever really experienced
without her.
Yes,
I have been humbled
by being a witness
to his boisterous way
turning listless
as he came to terms
with the term “terminal” –
once descriptive of locations
from whence he embarked
with his “Heart” on vacations
and returned with his
most precious memories..
I have been humbled
by being witness to a voice
that once resounded
retelling jokes –
lacking profoundness –
but still suited
for breeding laughter
in once soundless spaces
become naked and raspy
with grief –
vocal cords made weak
through loss and the reality
of death’s finality.
But as his witness,
I have been blessed
to know this man,
and though indirect,
to get a glimpse
of this man cherishing
his true love…
a love I now bear witness of...
hopefully with befitting humility.
