In the summer time
I make it my business
to bask in the
Sun
Illuminating my skin
with a Regal Glow of
Sistah
I pamper my afro more
Because
as I stroll
I want others to be
Reminded of
Nikki Giovanni or
Angela Davis
Maya Angelou and
Toni Cade Bambara
Ladies with light faces
That embraced
the True Feel of
Being
a woman of
Color
Knowing that the brain
and heart
is more than
abstract tones
That whether
you are
Blue Black
or as fair as a
winter's day
If you have
Ever been
dismissed or
denied
The satisfaction of your
Inalienable Rights
you were next to kin
Kindred spirits
Formed from rich soils
and golds
Our minds had to be tampered with
To prevent us from
Reaching our goal
Little things
like who is the best
Stagnate us from
Gaing new
Enlightened
Souls
I cannot be summed up
to a brown paper bag
Or
If my hair is good
to consider myself
Black
That is only a part of who
I am
For I am more than
what you see
You may elude with
Your version of the facts
But, that doesn't make it my
History
