Heartbeat

first love

Today I heard your heartbeat for the first time.

It was a gentle pulsing - I could see it too,
on your neck and wrists. It drowned out mine;
it was loud and booming, and I worried that you
might split a vein.

And I felt it - on your lips, and in the gaps
between your fingers as our hands intertwined
like ribbons. It was so violent that I thought perhaps
you were having some kind of fit.

Apparently you thought the same of me -
that this common occurance was some kind of illness.
But no. It was just our blood trying
to learn how to rush in unison. And our hearts
complying to the newfound fact that they could never part.

Today I heard my heartbeat for the first time.
