They told me hate was over there
They said that we must fight it
They said no time for a debate
They said that we must right it
They said you sacrifice your life
They said your fight is noble
They said go spread equality
They said to spread it global
They said to go to Vietnam
They said they need a hand
They need our help to free themselves
They want freedom in the land
They said we must go to Iraq
They said injustice conquer
They told me we must fight this thing
They said to have no fear
I said ok I understand
I said I’ll take this mission
I said this wrong we must remove
I said I see the vision
I took a stand and made a pledge
I said to count me in
I sailed the ship and flew the plane
I said that we would win
I dedicated my whole life
I raised my fist defiantly
I said I would not let it go
This inequality
Then it became quite crystal clear
Yes, clearly I could see
That some who wanted me to fight
Wanted to fight me
Fight the enemy of us
I was asked to do
But then I saw hypocrisy
Because one of my enemies was you
I fight for true equality
Everywhere I go
I fight it in the foreign lands
I fight it on my shores
I’m told to not accept injustice
In Iraq, Vietnam, Korea
I say I won’t accept it there
Or in America, either!
Don’t tell me that it’s been around
So I should just accept it
But when its in another land
Vigorously reject it
Don’t hide behind the mask of lies
I still see you inside your eyes
You want equality over there
But you do not want it over here
Some of us lie to ourselves
Live with a mind that is quite split
Be a hero overseas
At home be a hypocrite
I see racial injustice here and now
I know that we must right it
I know there’s no time for debate
I know that we must fight it
I pledge to fight it in this life
I fight because it’s noble
I fight to spread equality
In America, and too, global
I fight to win in Vietnam
I fight to win in Iraq too
If you’re discriminating in America
Don’t be surprised... I fight and win here too!
