The day you were born
My heart was full but torn
A beautiful baby boy
You’ve brought me so much joy
But I knew as you grew older
My worries would grow bolder
Now the time has come
And I know it won’t be fun
Some suggest it’s too soon
To talk to you about what looms
But as a young boy of color
You’ll be treated like no other
Every time you leave this house
It becomes a game of cat and mouse
Guilty before proven innocent
Look at a cop the wrong way and your life might be spent
Yes, it’s unfair
How you sometimes receive such glares
However, it’s life as we know it
And my anger burns like a hot pit
Teary eyes often get blurry
Because for others it’s a different story
But this is the world we live in
Life can be dangerous for black men
So with a heavy heart
I need to teach you about being smart
Some will watch you like a hawk
And that is why it’s time we had “the talkâ€.
