Un-American, They Say

Exasperated

when we won’t conform,

but why comply with a norm

that’s been awry since the day I was born?

Maybe less so since the days

my people were torn

from the fabric of their very existence,

but your eyes – so blinded by scorn –

focus angrily and deny the persistence

of the legacy of that inhumane system!

Your resistance to change

is now indifference to the pain

old policies still inflict on your victims.

So we bleed from the thousand cuts

of sharp micro-aggressions jux-

taposed to your profane narrative:

(That) if we’d just act

the same as you we could live

just as good as you do,

as if that isn’t a slight.

Deny who we are

and behave more white,

and that’ll make everything all right!

Like, that’s even possible;

let alone desired.

What’s it called when you make yourself

the standard all should aspire to?

Privilege.

Now, I want you to get this:

Being like you is NOT in my best moral

interest.
