151 years ago, we were freed,
Fresh off the plantation, there was an overwhelming need,
Searching for a sense of identity,
We had a hard row to hoe,
Writers like Harriet Beecher Stowe,
Defined the modern Negro,
Sharecroppers toiled long hours to raise dough,
Imagine picking cotton, tobacco, and wheat,
Many earned just enough to eat,
Fast forward 100 years, when "coloreds" got rights,
Still, civil struggles caused much strife,
Segregation moved to integration,
Dreams of slaves and MLK, became a manifestation,
Obama's ascension was a result of a culmination,
Of standing on the shoulders of unnamed leaders,
Standing tall with pride like Redwoods and Cedars,
Our roots are strong and nourished us well,
The future is here and now, can't you tell?
