Go to a HBCU,
Where the teachers and students look like you,
I went to Hampton University,
Class of 1998, Quintessence III,
My college education changed my life,
Joined NROTC and met my wife,
Studied Biology and learned to sail boats in the Hampton river,
Got elected to Student Government and became a life long giver,
Of ideals and time, tutoring students at Moton Elementary,
I'll volunteer for the rest of the century,
It wasn't quite 'A Different World' or the 'Quad,'
But I enjoyed every second of hanging with my squad,
If I had to do it again, I'd make the same choice,
Attending a HBCU gave me perspective and a voice.

Family separated by slaveryMy last name is Moore Because during the Civil War My Great Grandfather (age 10) was a slave On the Gordon plantation, and some jerk with the last name of Moore paid $500 dollars for a kid that was good with a horse That transaction split up a family in Tennessee and changed the whole course Of my family’s history Beyond ‘emancipation’ the Gordon’s remained a mystery To our family for a few scores and a century!
