Throughout time I've been
As free as my soul can be
With as much as I've been through
And still have yet to go
Time has taken its toll
To complacency bridge,
Paid it, crossed it
And never looked back.
When you're used to doing
Things on your own
Without asking anyone
For help or support
It's called independence.
It's just you.
Partially to blame
Because of learned behavior
You find that independence.
You're self taught
In more ways than one,
You have a sense of security
About the things you've done.
But often finding yourself
In dependence.
Looking back over your shoulder
Every now and again.
Wondering how you got to
Such a vast and open plane.
Then you realize
It was your independence.
All the while not realizing
You've made a left on lonely street
Instead of a right onto
Hide that pride boulevard
And then another right onto
We're here to help street,
Flashbacks of the "thanks but I'm good"
And the "nah, I'm okay" moments of pride
Flicker back and forth
Like a faulty light bulb in your cerebrum.
Visions of others
Don't seem so far away
When the distance between you
And the town of Acceptance
Is only a U-turn away.
And it finally sinks in
That your independence
Is why you're in dependence.
Aching sighs of realization
Humbles you when the
"I wish I hads" and the
"I should'ves" shake your head
In disbelief.
Lessons learned from the experience?
It's nothing wrong with being independent
Or having independence,
Just make sure your independence
Doesn't reign so much so
That you find yourself in dependence.
We'll all need someone at one time or another.
