The Business

Dr. Maya Angelou, A great African American Poetess once said, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.

There is something to be said for not saying anything- Janet Jackson

The Business

It is what it is, get closer and closer to what is real,

Live for who you are, and let us get down to business,

Forget about the rest and learn to take care of yourself,

Do not let the next person steal your joy,

Have faith in yourself and just trust in the Lord,

Let the haters talk noise because that is what they do,

But YOU, you just handle yours and take care of you,

So get on it, finish it, and accomplish it, because you are the business,

Women want to be you; men want to date you,

But they can want all they want,

Do not get mad at me, it is not my fault!

So get on it, finish it, and accomplish it, because you are the business,

Men, you have admirers too, do not think I was going to leave you out,

But in the end, know who you are no doubt!

Know what you want in life and do not let it pass you by,

Recognize the business, feel the business, become the business, because you are the business,

I do not know about you, but I am greatness and baby!

When I look at you I see greatness,

Hold it down for P.O.P, (people of power)

Because that is who we are,

People of power holding it down,

And when you do it, Don’t do it BARELY!

Be about the business, become the business,

Because YOU are “The Business.”

This poem is all about empowerment and knowing who you are and not what they think you are. I revised and changed a small part of this poem when I was running for Miss Southwestern 2015-2016, and this piece got me the winning title. One of the judges told me, was that it was original and from the heart. Women and Men, carry yourself as the business that you are about, and do yourself a favor and mind your business. Do not judge and talk down to one another, lift each other up. When we think about business, we think of “suit and tie,” it is ok to dress the part, but it is more important to be the part from within. That passion, compassion, humor, and style, let it all become a part of you in everything you say and do.

This poem also gave me the nickname “The Business.” Therefore, it somewhat just grew on me and I really became the business. In addition, my peers taught me a lot about myself that I did not see in myself.

Thank you to my Miss Southwestern coach, Mrs. Vivian Foster, for teaching me to make my words come to life.
