Black Codes

Look up the Black Codes to better understand American history
When you read them you’ll be pissed see
The US government made laws to suppress freed black folk
Today we free but still ain’t woke
Former slave masters forced sharecroppers to work
Or go to jail, so they toiled the dirt
The difference between 1865 and 1866 was a few cents
Freedom still felt like bondage for the emancipated
After the famous proclamation our ancestors were frustrated
Uneducated, broke, unable to vote, still lynched and castrated
To survive they conceded, ‘working’ for their former masters
Rearing and feeding white families while planting and harvesting their pastures
Fast forward to the present day
Laws and economics are still much the same way

Indeed! Same old poop; just a different toilet. Nice poetic lesson to the introduction of "The New Jim Crow"! Peace and Love, mlowe5,
