What are we doing?
What are we pursuing?
It’s 2018
And I feel like we’re losing.
We sit back and (wait)
On the outcome
Of private debates
On what steps civilians should take
To make America great.
Without keeping score,
We make room
For what is said we must endure.
The political blows to our souls
Have us banking on social media
While we invest our energy
In social drinking
And sativa.
These days,
We’re more interested in memes
Than dreams.
These days,
We’re more concerned
With what it takes
To keep people coming
Instead of focusing
On the real reasons why
They continue to leave.
Under black and white skies,
We’ve grown accustomed
To the heavy traffic
In and out of our lives.
Mix tapes replace degrees.
The times are shifting the order
Of what we strive to achieve.
Tattoos to cover insecurities.
Pettiness overpowers maturity.
We change according to
What we experience
And what we see.
I wonder
Which side of the spectrum
We will be embracing next week.
