From the annuals of racist symbolism
Now comes the “Litany at Virginia”,
Razor slicing keloids of once thought
Healed wounds veiled in deception;
Once again, the blatant symbols
And emblems of racism reek
With that stench that was once thought
To irritate even the nostrils and ears of God,
But the pale forensic omnipotent character
Of power mongering, again sinks its saber tooth
Into tenderized justice, releasing bigoted juices—
Flowing with the contaminated thoughts of amelioration;
Though the door is open, the caged bird continues to sing
The melodic blues of racism revealed in the cultured hell
That is laced in the deception of party politics players:
Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Communists—
All led by whom; all in the interest of whose ancestors?
They say that Virginia is the land of lovers; whose love?
Forgive and forget?! The first frigid slave ship landed here!
Let us forgive ourselves; but not the symbolism of the river:
In Virginia, the river runs really deep and they call it, The Black
River—May our souls never forget to look back and do right.
Remember, my children, amelioration is not a solution
And we are not the problem. Like the plague, some cancers
Will destroy a nation within a nation unless cured:
Only the worker to cure dies; the river works goes on;
We still have many boats to row to the shores of liberation.
