I must look in the eyes of the oppressor
I must stand tall, as my skin becomes my deepest treasure
My skin tells me I was built for this
My ancestors resilience gave me an innate feel for this
It is said that we will never truly know black history
But that’s what the oppressor wants
our past to become a mystery
I mean how do you tell a group of people held down for so long
That through their pains, setbacks, and struggles
Their safety is a question that has been prolonged
How do unteach a system that starts and ends at the hands of the oppressor
How do you tell a victim they’re a victim when they’ve always been seen as the aggressor
We must believe that the homeland is so poor
And America is so great
But it is only right, that we as a people desire more
and before we can love home
We must suppress all forms of hate
And sometimes I lose hope
I work so hard not to be that girl
But they look at me as if i don’t belong
But I dont let any sweat show
When they need to practice diversity
I become the poster child
But to them I’m not even human
I’m just another documented file
This is why I take pride
Take pride in every stride
Cause behind my people im not afraid die
It’s time we claim our space
Because everyday we stare our oppressor in the face
Deep down, we know this isn’t the way it was ever meant to be
Despite my experience, this isn’t case by case
It’s bigger than you and bigger than me
This is why I must stand tall in the eyes of my oppressor
So if I have to be painted angry and outspoken my entire life
It’ll be my pleasure
