We had peanut butter for crab legs
also enjoyed jello for our ice cream,
mother would say “Don't get upset,
others want it, but they can only dream”.
And our pants, our bottoms had quite a flare
we caught folks staring with a keen glare,
we thought their hope was noticeable
not, ran with the wind flare was back there.
School work done, we would grab a snack
out of our only green hornets backpack,
my two brothers grabbed a kite, me, a slingshot
shot at alley cats, straight at their rib rack .
We done this, even sis', for days on end
we were regular kids with one regular friend,
girls didn't like us so we didn't like them
we'd enjoy our kites as they caught the wind.
We drank green kool-aid as they cleaned sewers
pulling out cups, spoons to one dollar bills,
as dirty and nasty as they were, they wanna be
big brother cleaned 'em up helping more thrills.
Had jobs collecting pop bottles and shining shoes
stayed well fed thanks to the hotel Holiday Inn,
an early breakfast or evening dinner tray helped
had so much we were chomping rounding the bend.
Xmas? was on the 25th at home in every month
mother said to gift something no matter a fist bump,
if not, you'd get a gift of a belt on your rump
and if the buckle hit you you'd see a rising lump!
Not funny in the mist of pain, so we'd give
and yes, even to folks outside of the homestead,
especially in those times we had peanut butter
hoping, but mainly praying, someone had bread!!
