Three books in the Bible each foretold
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job
The first said that God is wise and just
People get what they deserve, pretty much
The second said that life’s unpredictable and hard to understand
The third begins and ends with a blessed and trusting man
Angels in heaven met with the Lord
And talked about Job whose measure was above board
Satan, whose name means the one who is opposed
Questioned God’s wisdom, and here’s what he proposed
Since Job is only good because he’s very blessed
Take away everything and watch Job fail the test!
Satan thinks Job fools God just to live well
God takes Satan’s bet and puts Job through hell!
His kids, servants, and livestock all die causing Job to yell
Job gets a skin disease and shaves his head in utter dismay
Job 1:21, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away
Job lost everyone and everything that he ever cared about
But in God Job still didn’t have a doubt
But then Job gets in his feelings and writes a few versus
A long poem lamenting all of his random curses
Job 3:3, ‘a child is conceived... May that day be darkness’
Eloquent prose from Job, but Satan was really the artist
Job’s friends visit and offer ‘sage’ advice
You used to be the man homie, what did you REALLY do to mess up your life?
Remember Proverbs, God is fair and just
You must have done something wicked, like lie, murder or lust?
This goes on for 34 chapters, his friends' guesses all dead wrong
Job maintained his innocence, but starts getting alarmed
Job accuses God of being unfair and demands a visit!
God obliges in the form of a great storm cloud exhibit
God doesn’t explain his bet with Satan
Rather he shows Job the universe and what he’s been contemplating
He asked if Job could manage all the large and small details
Snow on the mountains, sand under seashells?
Finally, God shows Job two ferocious beasts
And brags how essential they are for balance and peace
Job understands for God there’s more to wrong and right
Universal decisions way more complex than just black and white
Job knew that he couldn’t be God for a day, minute, or second
Job’s absurd demand for an explanation, he instantly regretted
Humbled by God’s wisdom, Job never learned the reason for his trouble
But was very surprised when God gave him back everything in double!
Job’s restoration was a gift that God decided to give him
And anyone else (‘good’ or ‘bad,’) as long as they trusted His wisdom
