A brisk October night
The scent of wood burning
Riding the night’s breeze
Drifts from town to town.
Once parked after coming in
From an errand filled day
I inhale deeply as I
Bask for a moment
In autumn’s chill.
Memories of barrel fire nights
Flood my frontal lobes
With past visions of our old place
I smile as the warmth of
The fire internally warmed me.
And with an ever so gentle nudge
I was returned to the present
By the night’s wind.
My memories have reclaimed their
Rightful place back in time
For future detection
My steps quicken and I
Enter my haven happily
With a sigh of relief.
I kick off my shoes
To feel the true comfort of
The carpet beneath my feet.
I open my blinds just enough
For one last look at this crisp
And beautiful night.
The street lights showcase
Foggy windshields like
A storefront display.
The tree leaves dance
Ever so slightly vibing to
The wind’s rhythm
As their shadows mimic
Their groove on the building’s side.
The clouds have tonight’s shift
The moon and stars are
Nowhere to be found.
Perhaps they’re illuminating
Other city skies in need of
Awe inspiring beauty.
Well it’s high time I
Bid this night a fond farewell.
The peacefulness of
Autumn’s chill have heightened
My sleep receptors and as I
Yawn just before the final
Closings of my eye curtains,
I kneel before my bed
In prayer with thanksgiving.
As I rise just before laying down,
I crack my window just a bit
To allow the cool night air to
Lullaby me to sleep.
Until morning’s light, good night all.
