(From The Queen And I)
The axon,
“What a difference
a day makes”—
floats on strange waters
of seemingly contradictions
as we move from tonight’s Old Year
to tomorrow’s New Year.
Our pandemic dilemmas will remain
the same—save the increase
in collateral damaging—Indeed,
the grief we will wildly ring-out tonight,
will eerily be echoing in the morning.
In the New Year, let us rip-out the tongue
of yesterday’s bells and replace it
with tomorrow’s clanging tongue echoing
liberating voices that can’t be un-rung.
As Queen Barbara has always said:
“You can rip-out the tongue, but you can’t
un-ring the freedom bell once it has been rung!”
