I saw an old man today, walking in the rain
Struggling with an umbrella, some grocery bags, and a cane
Trying to cross the street, over to the other side
I saw sorrow in his eyes, but he maintained his dignity and pride
A Good Samaritan stopped and offered him a ride
The old man waved to decline
The Good Samaritan shrugged, as if to say ‘I tried’
To those suffering in silence, it’s okay to accept help
As some are cursed with burdens, others are blessed with wealth
As the Good Samaritan, old man, and I
All crossed paths in the rain, we probably all asked ourselves why…
Why - do we do too much?
Why - don’t we do enough?
Or why can’t we put our guard down (for once) and finally trust?
The moment will soon pass
And in a flash, one day I might ask...
If someone needs a ride
Or perhaps I’ll be the guy in the rain, with a cane, who puts his pride aside.
