Oblivious to the then segregated
Games you use to play, you abhor
It when children change the rules
Of the games you use to play.
What was woefully wrong…
You still played with pride; although
Colored-hued ones could not play.
You still played with pride, because
Back then it was the law and your
Family was law-abiding patriots.
Back then, you refused to sit
In the long back comfortable seat
Reserved for Colored Only as
Fronts seats were yours only.
And back then, you never invited
Coloreds you knew anywhere with
You because Jim Crow was the law
And you and family were always on
The side of the law and would
Never break the just law.
You said that although Blacks
Being killed by police today is
Because of their race, it probably
Would not be so if they stayed
In their rightful place and did not
Agitate scared policemen.
Then you said that I should be ashamed,
Calling you a racist! “I swanee”, you said;
After all, there you were—a white woman—
Sitting in broad daylight on a park bench;
There, talking to a fine-looking black man!
Said, all she had to do was to scream and
And the real racist would come a running.
