Jamie, the big mouth
said it while we ate our lunches
and the next thing you know
we're on the floor trading punches
the principal rushed in
and tried to pull us apart
but when he said it again
I broke and aimed for his heart
although he outweighed me
by some forty pounds or more
he whispered it again
as we were ushered out the door
my hateful third grade eyes said
all that my tongue would not mention
I wanted to see that loud mouth Jamie
in the playground after detention
my sister pushed through the crowd
and saw me with many a bump and bruise
although Jamie was bigger than me
this fight I would not lose
I paused in mid-jab
to tell to the whole story to my brother
Jamie didn't call me a ''
he talked bad about my mother
you can talk about one's high water pants
or about one's nappy afro hair
you could talk about one's rat-filled house
but about my mother? don't you dare!!
my account of the incident
was verified by the kids in my class
and my brother, with hateful fifth grade eyes
told me to go and kick Jamie's ass
he patted me on the shoulder
the crowd urged me on, and then
I went after the loud mouth Jamie
with the strength of a thousand men
he wasn't laughing anymore
as I hit him with one punch and then another
he fell to the ground when I kicked his ass
"that was for my mother.."
