When she sang to me
In tones that healed scuffed elbows and knees
bringing with it
a soft summer breeze
when the scorching sun was a bit too much
Her song was a touch that I felt when tears overcame me in times of intense sorrow
And there came the tomorrow
The dawn of new days
Forgetting what I had cried about the day before
When she sang to me
singing out to me by my long formal name
Wherever I was going
wherever I was
Her voice sang out to me and I came
Running
Top speed
Dodging people on the busy sidewalks
Jumping over the hoods of cars parked on the street
She sang it only once
I would be there before she would repeat calling my
Long formal name
Yes ma’am
I am here
Reporting to the sound of your melodic voice
Carried though the sound of ice cream trucks
stickball games
double dutch hop skipping
and fire sirens heard from around the corner
Or up the nearby block
I need you to go to the market
We are out of stock in our pantry
The rice bowl was just about empty
Here is a twenty
A list of other things for household grocery
And she would sing to me
To take out fifty cents
For a box of my beloved lemon Italian icees
Her voice would sing to me
From the benches of the Sunday morning church choirs
I would sit with wondrous transfixation
For hours and hours
Wondering if God
Who no one had seen or heard
Really sings like that in heaven above
So much soul
So much love
So much time has passed since you have sung to me
So I decided to write this bit of poetry
Closing my eyes while at this moment I am alone
Remembering every note
And every blessed tone
Missing you most fervently
and missing the warm moments in time
yesterday
when you used to sing to me
