Just sat here listening to today’s news
And decided to share an elder’s views:-
The progression of today’s recession
Is not an alarming surprise to the
Survivors like us;
Our ancestors taught us the allegorical
Meaning of, “…In God we trust.”
That nickel, dime, and full quarter jar,
Has always taken us far:-
There was a time when the high price of gas
Was in cents;
Yet, for the striving working poor, it’s hard to
Imagine what that meant
For those blessed to have an inherited mortgage
Or ever-present rent.
Yet, from Monday to late Saturday night, we were able
To empty the jar
To buy expensive gas in cents—to make it to our church
No matter how far.
There, we received divine wisdom and guidance for
The striving meek
As to how we will be able to make and jar those cents
To make it through the week:-
So, just know that you don’t have to go out there and spend
50+ grand on a so-called dream car,
When that old “pink-slip” one can un-leaded take you and
All the family just as far:-
So, in these trying testing times of abject rising inflation
Let not your wants push your hopes and faith into recession.
