In the 6th grade, I won the first prize
Of Indiana’s state science fair, on one of my very first tries
First thing that morning, it felt like lightning had struck me - I was so energized!
I didn’t think that I could win, but I just felt so confident
In my understanding of the subject with all of the time spent
Researching the topic and making my display
For weeks, my family helped me to practice and cheered me on later that day
I explained how methane gas could be used to power your car or to heat your home
Just like in my favorite movie, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome!
And how farmers could make this fuel just by using the feces
Of cows, pigs, chickens, and many other animal species
There were hundreds of kids there with more impressive projects, but I was just ‘Jason’
As dozens of judges came by, I shared the details, jokes, and stories from my project presentation!
During lunch, I checked out the other kids computers, robots, volcanos, and poster boards
When my name was called at the awards ceremony, I was completely floored!
The only folks who clapped were my mom, dad, and my brothers, as I made my way to the stage
My picture and the headline, ‘Moore is elementary science champion’ made the Sunday local page!
