Teach Me To Dance (For Cousin Darlene)

CATEGORY

Dad worked nights and mom during the day
When needed
She would happily make her way over to our place
On Hamilton Avenue
Or take us to her place on East 38th
Not far from the tracks
Front porch overlooking the quiet street below
She had a mountain of 45’s ready to play on
The console stereo
Graceful
Moving in perfect time with the soul music beat
Teach me to dance, cousin
Then let’s get something to eat

I remember when
I turned ten
We trekked downtown to Edwin’s sporting goods store
Football helmets in the window
Shiny and new
But I saw this wonderful baseball glove in the back
Different from the others
Because it was blue
And she saw my eyes transfixed upon it
Took it to the counter
My new blue baseball mitt
So excited
I could barely sit while sharing a cheeseburger next door at Gino’s
And back in her car
Super 1600 AM
WWRL was the radio station
I was as quiet as a mouse as she knew and sang each soul hit
Please teach me to dance later, cousin

She had the answers I could never ask of elders
Cousin always kept it real
Knew the way I felt
The path she had walked a dozen years before I arrived
She knew the in’s and out’s
And every acceptable rule
Aunt Madie was the first to bring all my cousins to Sunday School
Each cousin had a distinctive singing voice
Every hymn sang at old Mission Church
We packed the old grey wooden front entrance
After Reverend Isaac gave his final
Amen
Cousin
Don’t forget to teach me how to dance
Just don’t teach me here in this place
And the smile on my cousin’s face
I still remember

May be a little blasphemy at this time
My cousin was so much to so many
Sprinkling inspiration and wisdom along her journey
And me
Only remembering my requests of her
So long ago
To teach me how to dance
To the soul 45’s that played on her console stereo
The last one on the stack to play
Tapping my foot singing with her now
In my mind
Much better than the Supremes and Temptations
Someday, we’ll be together
And one day
Together
We will find that small
Secluded corner of heaven
Where no one is watching
Where my cousin and I will dance
Together again
Because she taught me well
Yesterday

Beautiful! Thanks for the keloid memories. Did not know that my elder first cousin, "Litle'Tense" was not my elder Sister until my Junior Year in High School! She likewise taught me music, dance, and lifestyle wisdom. Rented an apartment for me during my first year of I feel you, Newpanther. Again thanks for the share. ONE. Peace and Love.

45s that played on a console stereo, that was a time of good vibes. Thanks for the platinum memories.
