First time out in so long
Flying solo but invited by an acquaintance.
I would’ve had some company
But it was meant for me to
Do this on my own.
Since I’m not a fan of the city,
My defense modes were fully engaged;
Not scared just on alert as I
Approach the establishment’s entry
Loud grooving music plays
As I go up the stairs.
Instantly recognized and welcomed
I’m dressed up just a little.
Something old, something new
Nothing borrowed but everything true.
Tan & black with just a touch
Of makeup, enough to
Enhance the features of
My lightly melanated skin.
A few pieces of jewelry
Some gold bracelets touched
With red to compliment
Cinnamon toast colored lips
And olive green to match
Transitioning irises that adjusts
Upon depending circumstances.
Something changed in me tonight,
I felt it surface from deep within
As it coursed through me.
Was this the old me letting go?
Was it the new me saying hello?
Whatever it was it felt good.
Smilingly yet remaining humble,
I accepted this newer version of me
As I continued enjoying the night.
Sipping on some pink moscato
Things were going well as
The night was still young.
Keeping the peripheral vision on alert
As I compose this write,
The vibe is decent on this
Cool yet comfortable Autumn night.
Bass and treble vibrations
Ripple like shockwaves
Throughout the room
Flowing through soul after soul.
Juicy fruit music mix plays
Bringing back them old school
Groove memories from
The 70s and 80s y’all!
A few folks were dancing
Along with the host
Hittin’ and kickin’ that electric slide.
As for me I’m not much of a dancer
I just groove to the beat
And sing along with the song.
I did have a good time though
Not as bad as I thought it would be
It felt good to be out.
And as the night came to a close
My defense modes were downgraded
As the host escorted me to my car.
Ending the night with thanks,
My music rides shotgun and
Despite the crazy wannabe
Speed racers on the highway.
I return home unscathed and
Content with the night’s events
Leaving the world on my doormat
With two clicks to the left.
I think I can get used to this.
