I promised
No one in particular besides me
That I would sit myself down
Flip the light switch
Listen for the sounds of its engine coming to life
Watch for this computer screen to project a desktop image
Four smiling faces
Looking at me
Silent
Inspirational
Waiting for me to write something that I never promised to do today
Wasn’t on my
To-do list
My
Honey-do list
Procrastination
Maybe I’ll get around to doing this tomorrow
List
But I’m in front of this thing
All lit up
Awaiting my command to
Address society
Impropriety
Blackness
Whiteness
anything to do with my love for you
for us
for our people
maybe a prayer to Him
if I die before I wake
please don’t take away my pen
until I finish what I promised to no one in particular
that I would write something today
half glass empty
jazz
spraying the room
a mist like
long ago incense amidst black velvet posters
black lights
I know I promised
But nothing came out of me today
Just a black screen
Where no one will read what
Was never on my mind today
tomorrow
Go straight to the customer service desk
with your
rain check
a poem will be there
I promise I make
to no one in particular
