Thy Good And Faithful Servant

CATEGORY

There was a God
seed planted
set in place from her ancestors to her
fertile teenaged heart somewhere in Tennessee
census finding her in Georgia
married at the age of twenty
with one on the way
that was the time of day back then
and eleven more would follow

There was a God
And she was His
Good and faithful servant
and dutiful mother and wife
clinging to the rock of faith for
the entirety of her life
and the stories handed down to me
by my daddy
and older members of my family
led me to believe
this
Good and faithful servant
whose footprints
were traced from Georgia
to Lakeland Florida
to Paterson NJ
and from her daughter
Essie Dee
whom I would never see
I came to be

And I also would never have the chance
to see you
thy good and faithful servant
and He called you exactly that
once face to face with Him
four years before the first chapter of my own history
but I am so glad for the stories
so many you left in others
passed down to me

I still contemplate
and was told that it was true
how you
walked with Him in rarified air
traveling from New York to California by train
with nothing but sandwiches
a purse
and a prayer
the conductor approaching you
a ticket
you must have
purchased with a receipt and a paid with a
ticket punch
"God has paid my fare"
and you continued to eat your lunch
a paid ticket each way you would lack
but traveled to California to see Uncle Jimmy
a purse and a sandwich and a prayer
got you there
and all the way back

the last story told to me
the last day of your earthly history
you knew the time was at hand
if you explained it to my aunt who was there
she would not fully understand
not a good bye
not a tear in your eye
"I am just going to my room
lay myself down on my bed to take a rest"
and at His request
you
the good and faithful servant
with a smile and sigh
went peacefully off to sleep
you died before you were awake
and you soul was His to keep

Pictures of your smiling face
your grace
faith
etched all over the place
sits in a frame on my desk
I have one...
I think I might have two
Thy good and faithful great grandmother
I wanna be just like you

Thank you Newpanther for the flow of tears of joy you just gave me. What a beautiful sacred tribute! I never knew my faithful mother's faithful indigenous mother her faithful African American father married. Neither did I get to know my own faithful African American father (The Rev. M. Lowe) who died when I was only a year and a half years old (just under 80 years ago). I have spent these 81 years of my life laboring in love to be a reflection of them. Again thanks for this write. To God be the glory. So mote it be i.e., Amen! ONE. Peace and Love.
