She Knew

You know it never dawned on me
what my mother knew
about that time, and that
again, her not wanted to ask
but the look in her eyes told
me she knew
when the change in her
pocketbook was missing
a quarter, dimes and
pennies
and me with the sweet
satisfaction of chewing
on bazooka bubble gum
while hiding my hands
in my pockets
She never said it
But she knew
