TO THE TASK AHEAD
I
No one can write our story but us;
His story merely footnote us:-
In the culture of the penned word,
We must personally ink ourstory;
Footnoting the keloids of history’s pain:-
In doing so, the rules must be ours;
Impervious to anglo-phobic critics
of the prose and poetry our cornerstone
Foundations of our own style:-
In our midst, do we not have
Our own Prophets…Seers?
Do we not have our own Scribes
And Griots? Do we not?!
II
Let us not write for their critics, but for ourselves;
Demonstrating mastery of the enforced language
Through which we must cipher flowing lines—
Discerning lies from undeniable living truths:-
Let those who merely write their history—
Void of ourstory—wallow in their criticism:-
Let them wallow in their snotty laughter
Of the punctuated ways we vibe the word;
After all, it’s ourstory…not their lying tales!
III
Our cisterns of the word are forever full;
Eternally filled from the divine well of our God:-
Come—sage Griots—let us continue to shed light
On the footnotes of his story of our shadowed story;
Enlightening our Exodus children with divine wisdom:-
Let us enlightening them in awareness
That they may strategize from the wandering
And wondering of what is next that must be done:-
Come—sage Griots—let’s unveil eyes…unplug ears
And free the minds of our gifted love ones from God:-
Our youth must know ourstory; and in doing so,
Realize they are those we have been waiting for:-
Let us infuse them with divine wisdom and guidance
That they not be exploited into oppressive entertainment;
But become the new enlightening ebon Griots of enlightenment:-
