Are you tipping or dipping?

In the server industry many servers hourly pay is $2.13 an hour. The rest of their income is earned from their tips. Do you know that the average tip should be between 18 to 20 percent, or more if you choose? But people tend to leave less and sometimes less can be based on the server’s performance, the wait time on the food, the person’s finances at that time, or just because. Then there are also times when you can give “Great” service and still do not get a tip.

Now most upscale restaurants have their servers best interest at heart because that 18% gratuity is automatically included in your total. But what about the small diners and restaurants that have great food and great service, but do not take out gratuity? Here’s the breakdown. There are times when a bill is $100.00 dollars and for every hundred the 18% tip should be $18.00, but the customer only tips $5.00.

Then there are times when the bill is $10.00 and the customer tips $10.00. At the end of the night, the computer generates what it believes you should have earned in tips based on your total SALES, yes sales. Now what happens when a server gets NO tip and a customer dips on a $100.00 order? Well, the system doesn’t know that and will still calculate the $18.00 that you should claim for your taxes. Now mind you, some customers tip more and above, so shout out to those customers. Those who tip more, it balances out for the ones who tip less or not at all. Then you have the parties, for example, the party of 15 with 15 separate checks, smh. That definitely can be stressful on a server trying to keep up with all those separate payments, “I only had a salad, I just had the spinach dip and some water…” and so on and so forth.

When are we going to all come together? Because keep in mind, a lot of them upscale restaurants don’t play that. They let it be known upfront, only one or two cards can be used, that’s it. So yall, my suggestion is, when yall go out to eat in groups, figure it out, even if yall gotta zelle or cash app all the money to one person’s card, do that, that would help the server out a lot.
But truthfully, I pray for the day when EVERYONE at the table can pull out their card and say to the server, “I got it, no I got it, take my card, nooo, take mine.” If you or your circle can’t foot the entire bill where only one card is used, then you need to level up and re-evaluate your circle. Just saying.
Anyway, next time you go out to eat what are you doing, are you tipping or dipping? (Smile)

Great informative write. I would add that each one should simply give the waiter/server a cash-in-hand tip, based upon what you can afford. As a part-time waiter back in the 60's, this always made me happy! Back then (and even now) some don't have a card. ONE. PEACE AND LOVE.
