He wrote so well and poetically
His playwrights Zoetically

A legend to his time and poetry

Born in Gurabo Puerto Rico in 1946
From his country he was torn
He wrote

"This Is Not The Place Where I Was Born"

He moved with his family to New York when he was four
In 1954
his father walked out the door

Leaving his family hungry and poor

He ran the streets of New York with the dragons

He was arrested at age eleven
Hustling on the streets for food and money

By age 20 he was a full fledge junky
He could not shake the monkey

Incarcerated in sing sing
For armed robbery and other things

The { Short Eyes} played out its scene in history

prison life, love, death and mystery
short eyes prison slang for one who distastefully touches a child

{ Short Eyes} nominated and published in a book

Yet and still in his veins more heroin he took

To relieve the pain of going insane
While his name was a credit to his fame

Puerto Rican playwright and actor

Who wrote

Cocaine nose carefully taken' cocaine blows

Nominated for several awards the headlines read
To his credit
he wrote

New York City hard time blues
its deep I read it

But heroin was his muse
Some of his poems amused

I guess it chased away the blues

When he wrote that day

Warriors cry of battle and I
Kill, Kill, Killed all my troubles away

How great he was if he only knew
Through his eyes you could see the boy that cried

I want to climb up on a
tenement sky

Who had one request before he died

Please when I die
don’t take me far away
keep me nearby
take my ashes and scatter them thru out
the Lower East Side.
