YOU MADE MY BABY STRONG

Without you my baby learned to smile and I could already see a joy for life shining in her eyes, I wish you could have seen it because that would have been a wonderful surprise.
Without you she learned to walk and for the first time to stand on her own two feet. She didn’t know it yet but she had to be strong in this world if she was going to compete.
She didn’t need you to hold her hand walking into her first day of school, where she learned that knowledge is power was the only golden rule.
You were absent the first time a little boy pushed her down while they played in sandbox, to explain to her that the real reason why he did it was because he really liked her a lot.
You missed the first time she got dressed to go to her first school dance, to tell her she looked breathtaking and beautiful after you took your first glance.
The first time a boy broke her heart she ran home and laid on my bead and cried, she didn’t have you to tell her she was a princess and that this young boy didn’t need her by his side.
You didn’t get a picture of her and her date before she left to go to her high school prom, when I know she wanted to share this day with you and not just her mom.
You really missed out on seeing her graduate from high school, even though I told you months in advance and you still didn’t show that really wasn’t cool.
You didn’t reassure her the day she left for college and for the first time being out there on her own, to let her know that even though she was leaving that with you she would forever have a home.
The day she got her first job she was so excited to share with you her good news, until she got your answering machine and you never called her back that really gave her the blues.
The day her stepfather walked her down the ilse you said you couldn’t make it because you couldn’t afford the plane, for the most important day of her life when she took another mans name.
You didn’t see the look of happiness when she looked into the face of her very first child, but I could see the longing of wishing you were there when she looked at me and smiled.
Even without your presence she learned ways of the world and the rules of right and wrong, and because she had to learn all these things without your help you made my baby strong.
