So someone once asked me why dont I do poetry slams...first off, lemme say this, I am not knockin anyone for participating in slams, I mean, its kinda cool listening to folks battle it out to see who's the best at what they do, so if thats you, do you...now, back to the question at hand, they ask why don't I participate in poetry slams, to be the champ of a region and maybe even go national, to show my talents on the grandest of stages, I replied, I grew up in East Chicago, everyday for eighteen years we battled each other over negativity, so I find it kind of perplexing that anyone would ask me to battle the next man spittin positivity and truth, see I thought I left beefing alone as a youth, yet you asking me to beef intellectually with other girls and guys who simply lookin for fingersnaps, bump that, even from the slave days, they had us battling each other, being black, its basically bred in my DNA to battle my fellow brother, I done battled heart issues, battled a broken home coming up, battled life after my grandmother passed, and you ask why I aint up here battling another person to show my ass, man please, the title of grand slam champ dont mean nothin to me, cause even champs words aint solidified unless its actions behind em are legit, just ask Marion Jones if you think Im lyin........you wonder why you dont hear me cryin about being some spoken word king, its cause my lineage been wearing crowns since they were schooling Greeks back in Egypt, and talk is cheap, but those pyramids were expensive, they cost lives to build, so if others choose to be kings at running their mouth, thats cool, I'll continue to wear the crown that was passed down from my folks who built me up before I was even sperm in my daddy's nuts, I choose to speak from my gut, not ensure that Im saying metaphors to keep the judges attention, cause a lot of cats talkin dont even believe what they spittin, and a lot of em preachin a lifestyle that they aint even livin, plus, you asking me to beef with others over who can sound more poetically gifted, I dont wanna beef with others over who can spit the hardest, Pac and Biggie taught me that.....so if I never acclaim a title of champ, Im good with that, its okay to be unknown sometimes, cause what you dont know, can kill you

Second PlaceWhen I qualified for this slam, my brother asked me, what if you come in second place, I thought about it for a minute, and then I remembered how for my whole life I’ve always came second, I was the second child born to a broken mother whose father drunk whiskey for recreation and considered beating my grandmother his therapy sessions, I was the second string on my high school football team, but I really became a poor sport when I got second place in divorce court because my ex wife won there, I came in second place in the fourth grade to a guy named terrence dennie at a shoot out contest, and I avoided shaking his hand after the competition, see crazy enough for me, second place has become a cancer that goes into remission but always come backs like monthly bill collectors, hitting me with a second notice saying if you do not pay your dues, the seconds that you have to enjoy these lights will turn into hours of darkness, then I started to wonder, who was that person that w... |
